This Veterans Day, please take a moment to honor all U.S. Veterans and victims of wars. Our way of life would be utterly different without those brave individuals who have dedicated themselves to the service and protection of others.

Ways to honor Veterans on Veterans Day

Take a moment of silence

Many countries take two minutes of silence at 11 A.M. on November 11th to honor their Veterans. This year, take a moment and find a space and time of your own to honor, pay tribute and say thank you to U.S. Veterans. Be proactive and personal. Veterans Day should be about more than a post on social media.

Attend an event

Veterans Day events are likely held in your area, either virtually or in person. Attending these events is your opportunity to show Veterans in your area you support.

Donate to an organization

Do some research on organizations that support Veterans, or ask a Veteran you know what organizations make the most impact. Donating to these organizations spreads your support to a larger group and may genuinely make a difference in the life of a Veteran.

Reach out to a Veteran

Connecting with a Veteran by writing to them, visiting a V.A. hospital, or having a conversation with them lets them know their voice is valued and important.

Brief history of Veterans Day

In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. President Wilson wanted Armistice Day to be “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.” In 1954, after World War II and Korea, Congress changed the name of Armistice day, replacing the word ‘Armistice’ with ‘Veterans.’ Since that amendment, November 11th has been designated Veterans Day to honor all American Veterans.
